A skin consultation with a skin specialist is key when it comes to finding a skincare plan that suits you!

Here are 5 reasons you should get a skin consultation:

1. To determine your skin type

At a skin consultation, a skin therapist will assess your skin and determine your skin type. Then, they can determine whether the skin is dry or dehydrated, whether you have a broken barrier and sensitivity or whether you have acne or rosacea.. Once you know what you are treating you can then decide what ingredients your skin type needs.

Often clients think their skin is dry and are using heavy cleansers and moisturisers that don’t actually suit as their skin is dehydrated. Having your skin analysed will ensure you use correct products for your skin type.

2. Skin products are not a one size fits all

Everyone’s skin is different. A serum that suits one person won’t suit another. If a friend tells you she is using a fab new moisturizer and you can see her skin is glowing and clear, do you go and buy it too? Beauty bloggers frequently recommend a great serum and talk about how much it has improved their skin. Its important to note that the product that has been amazing for one person, may not suit your skin at all.

During a skin consultation, your skin therapist will analyse your skin, ask the right questions and fully understand your skin before they recommend any products. Not every skin is the same. I will tailor your daily skin routine to suit your skin type and skin goals.

3. A Skin Consultation can prevent you spending lots of money

You can end up spending a lot of money on skincare if you don’t get correct advice. Do you have three or four different serums at home? Are you getting frustrated with your cleanser or moisturiser and changing brands frequently? Have you got 10 different skin products on your shelf? Most people only need around five products for a daily routine.

During your skin consultation, your skin specialist will help you to make a focused plan with a select few products and ingredients that you need. You are not looking for a quick fix, you want long-term results. Buying new products every few months and changing products around frequently isn’t always the best option. Take time with one or two new products before moving on to more intensive products or treatments. At your skin consultation, your therapist should create a plan for your skin.

4. Using Active Products can create havoc if not used right

Active ingredients, like glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid or retinol, can be great for your skin. However, if you use them incorrectly, they can actually do more damage than good. If you decide to use any active ingredient, you need to build up the levels of concentration over an appropriate duration. I usually recommend different percentages of retinol for each skin type and also the frequency of use will change per person.

A skin specialist can explain the key active ingredients that may help your skincare concerns. So, glycolic acid or retinol are great for the skin, but only when used correctly!

5. To get expert advice on products

Your skin should always have a therapist examine your skin prior to any product recommendation. Instead of picking up a product in the shop, get a qualified skin specialist to examine your skin and prescribe. After a skincare consultation, I give you a skin routine, tell you when and how to apply the products, in what quantities, for how long and what the next steps will be.

Guesswork is spending the money and hoping for the best. A professional skincare consultation is investing wisely on the right products for the best results.
