Dry, dehydrated, tight or dull skin is something many of us experience this time of the year.
Why? As winter approaches, we are exposed to cooler temperatures, harsh winds and dry humid air indoors.
I always recommend changing around your daily products as the seasons change. The products you use in summer months are not necessarily the best products for your skin throughout winter.
So, what changes should we make to our skin routine in winter?
Exfoliate two to four times a week to remove all your dead skin cells.
A lack of exfoliation causes dead skin cells to build up on the surface of the skin. Then, when we go to apply active serums or moisturisers they cannot penetrate. So, exfoliation is an important part of every skin routine.
If you are experiencing dull skin throughout winter – exfoliating can be a great way to create fresh skin cells and brighten the skin.
What kind of exfoliant should I use?
There are many different types of exfoliators to choose from. I recommend different ones based on skin type and skin goals.
There are physical exfoliants ie ‘face scrubs’ and chemical exfoliants such as glycolic or lactic acid based solutions. One I love at the moment is Bright & Clear Solution from AlumierMD. This is lactic acid based and applied like a toner. Suited for most skin types.
2. Bump up your moisturizer
Nourishing and hydrating products are essential in winter to restore the skin and prevent dehydration.
To boost skin hydration, one simple change is to swap our regular night moisturizer for a richer one.
3. Layer Up
I like to use a hydration serum twice a day throughout winter. A good hyaluronic acid serum is perfect for both hydrating and plumping up the skin. It will prevent water loss in the skin.
If your skin feels a little tight or dehydrated then try applying a hydration serum at night, to a damp skin, then apply your moisturiser over it to lock in moisture!
4. Limit your hot baths/showers
This time of the year, we tend to get some cold, frosty mornings. It can be tempting to jump into a nice hot shower before heading out to work. However, hot water can dry out the natural oils in your skin. If possible, try not to take a long hot showers or bath. Instead, swap for a quick lukewarm shower.
Afterwards, pat your skin dry and apply a body moisturiser while still damp.
5. Facial Treatments
Schedule a few regular facials throughout winter. Facials are a great way to repair, nourish and brighten the skin.
For the winter months, the skin won’t be exposed to a lot of sun. This is the perfect time to start on some chemical exfoliants , either in your daily skin routine or in a course of skin peels with a skin specialist. Chemical peels will help exfoliate and brighten the skin.
